Man suffers life-threatening injuries in Highwood train strike
A 23-year-old man reportedly was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a train early Thursday morning in Highwood, news first reported by Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
According to Metra, an outbound train struck the man at approximately 1:40 a.m. on elevated tracks near Bloom Street and Green Bay Road, a noncrossing location that is about half a mile south of the Highwood station.
The man was transported to Evanston Hospital and remains in critical condition, said Metra spokesperson Meg Thomas-Reile in an email. She said the man was identified via fingerprints; however, he has no known address or next of kin.
The involved Metra train was the final run of the night on Metra’s UP North line, and service was restored by 3:45 a.m., Thomas-Reile said.
Metra is investigating the incident and reportedly are reviewing any available footage.
Thomas-Reile added, “Train tracks are never a shortcut or a safe path to walk.”
