Suspect in Monday’s shooting arrested in Indiana

Police in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Friday arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting on Monday night in Highland Park.

According to a press release from the City of Highland Park, the suspect — whose name was not immediately made public — was apprehended and will remain in custody in Indiana on local charges until extradited to Illinois and potentially charged.

Highland Park officials announced early this week that they had identified two potential suspects in the July 20 shooting, in which one man was shot and hospitalized. After arresting the suspect, Indiana police came across the Lake County arrest warrant during their investigation.

The shooting occurred around 7:35 p.m. on Monday, July 20, in the 300 block of Walker Avenue, where the suspect was visiting a residence at the time, according to police. Police say they have since been working with federal and regional partners to pursue and develop leads on this case.

Following the shooting, the Highland Park police identified two individuals, who were “persons of interest” speaking to the victim prior to shooting.

The victim, a 30-year-old man, was hospitalized in critical condition, but was improving as of Tuesday, July 21, the City previously announced.

The investigation indicated that the shooting occurred between individuals who knew each other.

Following the shooting, the City advised residents to shelter in place for about three hours before lifting the order.
