Highland Park fireworks retry scheduled for Aug. 4, following National Night Out

Residents are getting a second chance this year to enjoy a Highland Park Day fireworks show, as the city has rescheduled the display for National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

City officials announced the plans in an update released Friday after the July 3 show was postponed because of thunderstorms.

“It could look like it’s rescheduled to a random Tuesday, but it’s not a random Tuesday,” City Communications Manager Amanda Bennett said. “We thought it would be perfect to reschedule the fireworks to August 4 because it’s the National Night Out event.”

The City is “excited” to add this special event to the National Night Out celebration, Bennett said, calling the fireworks the “perfect capstone” for the event.

The City reportedly had a six-month window to access the contracted fireworks show and Aug. 4 works for the contractor, Mad Bomber.

National Night Out is a nationwide initiative observed through community-level events that encourage police officers and community members to connect in an effort to build trust.

Highland Park’s version will begin at 6 p.m. on Aug. 4 and Hidden Creek AquaPark, 1220 Fredrickson Place and will be punctuated with the free fireworks show beginning at 9:15 p.m. Additional viewing is available at Sunset Valley Golf Club, 1390 Sunset Road, the City says.

Prior to the fireworks, residents will meet the men and women of the Highland Park Police Department and enjoy family-friendly games and activities like free swimming, a bounce house, a live DJ, snacks and a petting zoo, as well as giveaways, demonstrations and more, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

According to the City, additional parking for individuals who plan to attend just the fireworks display will be available at Sunset Valley Golf Club. Parking will be limited at that location and guests should arrive no earlier than 6 p.m. Overflow parking will be available at Sunset Woods Park, with crossing guards directing pedestrians to Hidden Creek AquaPark. A limited menu will be available at Sunset Valley Golf Club.
