Record Roundup: What to do with your trees, lights and even Styrofoam

The holiday season includes plenty of traditions, even when it ends.

It’s time to clean up. Local agencies and groups can help you with that. See how and when you can responsibly dispose of your trees, lights, wreaths and even Styrofoam in all towns in our coverage area.

WILMETTE

Trees: Jan. 5-16 — place Christmas trees in typical pickup location (only residents with curb collection should place trees on curb).
Lights: 24 hours thru Jan. 31 outside Wilmette Public Works, 711 Laramie Ave. — in partnership with Elgin Recycling, your lights will be recycled free of charge. Only string lights accepted.
Styrofoam: 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday inside Public Works, 711 Laramie Ave. (except Dec. 31-Jan. 1) — Only clean, white Styrofoam in blocks and sheets (no peanuts or food-related Styrofoam).

WINNETKA

Trees: Jan. 5-26 — Pickup curbside for shredding, chipping and composting.

GLENCOE

Trees: Wednesdays thru January — Lakeshore Recycling will pick up the trees from the parkway.
Lights: 24 hours thru April 1 — Drop off at Public Works building, 320 Hazel Ave. No garland, ribbons or bags.

NORTHFIELD

Trees: First two weeks of January — Place live trees and wreaths at the curb for transport to composting facility. Trees cannot be bagged or decorated.
Lights: Thru Jan. 31 outside of Village Hall, 361 N. Happ Road, or Community Center, 401 Wagner Road — In partnership with the Village, park district, Go Green Northfield and Elgin Recycling.

KENILWORTH

Trees: First three weeks of January — Place at curb without any decorations on your regular pickup day. Trees are chopped into mulch and used in local parks. Limit one tree per household. Others require yard waste sticker
Lights: 24 hours a day thru Jan. 13 at Village Hall, 419 Richmond Road, or Public Works garage, 347 Ivy Court

HIGHLAND PARK

Trees: Jan. 2-Jan. 23 — Leave trees curbside or at end of driveways. The park district will also accept dropped-off trees through Jan. 23 at Larry Fink Park, 1377 Deer Creek Parkway, and Danny Cunniff Park, 2700 Trailway. 
Lights: 7 a.m.- 1 p.m. every Tuesday and first Saturday of month at Highland Park Recycling Center, 1180 Half Day Road.

SKOKIE

Trees: Jan. 5-12 — Place trees (with no decorations or plastic bags) in normal trash-collection area. They will be picked up and turned into mulch.
Lights: 24 hours a day, thru Jan. 31 at Public Works main entrance, 9050 Gross Point Road — String lights, rope lights, LED lights and extension cords are accepted.
