Glencoe looking for ideas for downtown parking. Give yours on June 2.

Recommendations for potential solutions to what village officials call an “ongoing problem” in Glencoe may be coming this summer.

Glencoe Village Manager Phil Kiraly announced during the Village Board’s meeting on Thursday, May 15, that town officials will host an open house in June to gather feedback from residents on potential downtown parking and streetscape enhancements.

As previously reported by The Record, Glencoe officials in 2024 outlined their intentions to move forward with a downtown parking study — the first such review in nearly a decade — to address frequent concerns about the downtown commercial district.

The open house, scheduled for 5 p.m. on Monday, June 2, at Writers Theatre, will be a drop-in event for residents to talk with town officials about “ways to perhaps enhance parking in the downtown and enhance the streetscape and find ways to manage our parking a little bit differently,” Kiraly said.

From there, Village staff anticipate conducting a discussion with the Village Board in mid-June during a committee of the whole session. Officials then believe that a return visit back to the board could occur in August with final recommendations and next steps forward.

The use of Glencoe’s downtown area has drastically shifted over the last decade, town officials previously told The Record, additionally noting that since the beginning of the pandemic, curbside pickup and deliveries, as well as outdoor dining, have surged.

Glencoe’s recently adopted comprehensive plan envisions big possibilities for the village’s central business district, including several potential redevelopment sites as well as the potential for increased building heights that could enable more density.
