New friend just wingin’ it at Glencoe Village Hall

A star was born at Glencoe Village Hall this month.

While the spotlight was likely not her intention, a female duck (or mallard) made herself at home among the bright spring flowers inside a raised planter near the entrance to the civic building.

The Village announced the arrival of their new friend on Instagram and Facebook. The post garnered more than 200 reactions — well above a common post from the Village.

Dozens of social media commenters were happy to make name suggestions, from Hazel (after the street in Glencoe), Petunia, GlenCoCO and Feather Flocknear, to name a few. In the end, Village staff selected Glenda for their new feathery friend.

Glencoe’s Communications Manager Sammy Hanzel said Glenda made her nest just a few days after new flowers were planted.

Glenda wasn’t done making an impression. She laid six eggs in her new planter home.

Hanzel said the Village has set up a camera to hopefully “capture them hatching!”
