E-commerce leads to arrest in Wilmette garage burglaries

Wilmette police apprehended a Chicago man on March 4 in relation to a series of burglaries to garages between Feb. 22-24.

According to a news release, items for sale on Facebook Marketplace matched items stolen from the burglaries, helping investigators secure a search warrant for two addresses in Chicago.

Stolen items reportedly were found at the locations, and an adult male was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary and the online sale of stolen property. The man also faces gun and cannabis charges unrelated to the Wilmette burglaries.

According to a previous crime alert from the Wilmette Police Department, multiple offenders are believed to have participated in the crimes, and police say a search for other potential offenders is ongoing.

Wilmette police released the arrested individual into Evanston police custody in relation to similar burglaries.

The Wilmette Police Department issued an alert on Feb. 28 calling attention to a string of burglaries to unlocked garages in east Wilmette.

According to the alert, all eight incidents occurred east of 9th Street and south of Forest Avenue and primarily between 1-5 a.m. In another incident in that area, an unlocked home was burglarized.
