Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Harper Glinn, New Trier softball
Harper Glinn was an All-Conference first baseman for the Trevians. A four-year varsity player, Glinn will continue playing softball with Colby College.
1. Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
It’s not exactly a ritual, but I have one particular hair ribbon that I started wearing when I was 12 years old and now it’s just something I wear in a hair tie and it’s become my lucky ribbon and I feel like I have to wear it.
2. Why Colby?
It might sound cliche, but the strong academics and athletics were both very important to me. And also there are many opportunities to branch out in clubs and classes and different activities and I’m excited for that as well, to learn who I am at this smaller school.
3. When did you know softball was your game?
I started looking at schools my freshman year, but at the end of sophomore year I kind of sealed the deal. and thought, ‘I really can’t imagine myself not playing this sport, because it’s been part of who I am for so long.’ I knew I wanted to play and keep going.
4. What do you enjoy about the sport?
The culture on teams is really strong. It’s really an individual sport but you come together as a team and build off each other. I think culture is like no other. Obviously it’s a game based on failure so it can get hard. But when the right teammates are behind you, it makes it worth it.
5. What is your dream job?
If money didn’t matter, I would probaly want to travel the world and maybe take photos. Maybe a travel blogger would be cool. See the world.
6. What is your favorite thing to do off the field?
I try to get outside as much as I can in the summer. My dog (Sadie, 12, a black Lab mix) and I will hang out together or I will take her on walks. I love anything outside when it’s nice out.
7. If you could play another sport, what would it be?
The first thing that comes to my head is field hockey because of my sister (Kennedy Glinn, NTHS 2025 graduate). I sometimes go out and help her, and try my hardest to take shots on her, because she is a goalie. It seems fun. I feel like with enough practice I could get good at it, but right now, I’m not.
8. If you’re in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?
This is an unpopular opinion, but root beer is my favorite soda so probably that. I also really like Hersey’s Cookies ‘N’ Cream bars.
9. What is something people people don’t know about you?
I think my sister might have answered this one, but it’s really the only fun fact I know. I used to live in Miami (until 2019), so that is a big part of who I am. We go back back and visit, because we have a lot of friends and family down there.
10. What does New Trier softball mean to you?
New Trier softball is a big part of who I am, obviously doing it for the last four years. The friendships I made through the years have been so special to me, and working with coaches — whether they were there four years or the different coaches who have changed out — but working with everyone and getting to know everyone’s processes that are different from my travel team has been amazing to see. Seeing the growth of the team has been really rewarding. I’m sad to leave it behind but I know I have so much in front of me.
