With dangerous cold (-35 wind chill) en route, view school closures, warming center locations

Temperatures across the North Shore will plummet to dangerous levels beginning Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

An arctic front reportedly will bring subzero temperatures — between -5 and 2 degrees — overnight and through Friday with windchills reaching -35 in the North Shore, forecasters say.

The most dangerous cold will present between 3 a.m. and noon on Friday, according to the NWS.

The weather service says at that time there is a high risk for hypothermia and frostbite in less than 10 minutes.

Frozen pipes are also a concern, and the NWS recommends letting faucets slowly drip. Other recommendations include staying indoors (pets too) and checking on vulnerable friends and neighbors.

The dangerous temperatures, while expected to rise some on Saturday, are expected to continue through Sunday morning before reaching 18 degrees on Sunday afternoon.

A period of snowfall is forecasted to begin Saturday afternoon.

The expected cold is impacting local schools:

• All New Trier feeder public schools (Winnetka District 36, Glencoe District 35, Wilmette District 39, Avoca District 37, Kenilworth District 38 and Sunset Ridge District 29) schools will be closed on Friday.
• New Trier High School will have an e-learning day on Friday. Extra-curriculars have also been affected with the boys basketball game moving to Thursday at Deerfield.
• Loyola Academy will be closed on Friday and have “asynchronous learning.”
• Highland Park and Deerfield high schools will engage in remote learning on Friday.
• Niles North and West high schools and District 73.5 also will have e-learning days on Friday.
• Skokie public elementary districts 65, 68, 72 and 73 have yet to announce their respective plans for Friday.
