No injuries when Yellow Line collides with car in Skokie
A Yellow Line train struck a car in downtown Skokie on Tuesday afternoon that had ignored railroad crossing signals and driven onto the tracks, a spokesperson for the Village of Skokie said.
No one was reported injured, officials said.
Skokie emergency personnel responded to a collision involving a Chicago Transit Authority train on the Yellow Line track in the 8400 block of Niles Center Road around 12:58 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, said Patrick Deignan, Skokie’s director of communications, in an email.
On scene, police determined that a car traveling northeast on Niles Center Road “disregarded the properly functioning lowered railroad crossing gates and activated warning signals, entered the railroad tracks, and was struck by a southeastbound train,” Deignan wrote.
The operator of the train reportedly was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, but no injuries to the train passengers or the driver of the vehicle were reported.
A spokesperson for the CTA confirmed via email that Yellow Line service paused after the incident involving a “non-CTA vehicle improperly entering the tracks at a grade crossing”.
The CTA spokesperson also stated there are no reports of any CTA passenger injuries.
Normal service on the Yellow Line appeared to have been restored as of 3:30 p.m. The collision apparently took place between the Dempster Station and Oakton-Skokie Station stops.
