Police have two suspects in custody after 11 gunshots fired in Highwood Monday night

No injuries reported, officials say

Highwood police have detained two individuals as part of their investigation into a Monday evening shooting that left none injured, the city’s chief of police told The Record.

Nearly a dozen gunshots were fired around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, June 22, in the 300 block of Grove Street, Dave Wentz, the Highwood Police Department’s Chief of Police said.

Police are not yet releasing the identities of the two individuals they detained, but investigators located a firearm and 11 rounds of ammunition from the scene, Wentz said. The two suspects in custody are juveniles, Wentz told The Record on Wednesday.

The recovered firearm did not match the rounds that were fired, per Wentz. Police are still actively searching for the gun connected to the incident as of publication time.

Wentz said no injuries occurred as a result of the gunshots. He added that the shooting was a targeted threat and there is no ongoing danger to the public.

Officials could not confirm the exact number of officers who responded to the scene Monday night, and the department is still continuing its investigation as of Wednesday morning.

Several residents who live near the intersection of Highwood and Grove Avenues told The Record Tuesday afternoon that they heard multiple gunshots Monday night.

“The (gunshots) were really loud … so we immediately laid on the ground, waited until they stopped and called 911,” resident Diana Cruz said.

Resident Jennifer Alcala got home around 1:30 a.m. when the scene had seemingly already culminated, and was surprised to hear the incident happened.

“Hearing that there were gunshots in the area was very unexpected,” Alcala said. “It’s not something that you see around here often, so it was kind of scary.”

David Lipsky, who lives near the scene, told The Record that he contracted the police after seeing someone “run down Grove Avenue toward North Avenue.”
