Lee passes for three scores, runs for another as Ramblers surge in Indy

Loyola Academy struck for four second-half touchdowns to defeat perennial Indiana power Cathedral 33-19 Friday night at Butler University in Indianapolis.

The TDs came on passes of 19 and 8 yards from Matthew Lee to Charlie Fowler and on 1-yard runs by Melo Maldonado and Lee.

A 47-yard pass from Lee to Fowler on Loyola’s first play from scrimmage was wiped out by a holding penalty. With 4:42 remaining in the first quarter, the eighth-ranked team in Indiana took a 7-0 lead on Tell’i McCullough’s 2-yard run and Matt McGovern’s extra-point kick.

The Ramblers tied the score with 1:51 remaining in the quarter on Lee’s 10-yard pass to Jordan McKinley and Ryan Edwards’ conversion.

Early in the second quarter, Cathedral reclaimed the lead on a 55-yard pass play that saw Evan Johnson race down the right sideline after catching a pass from Emmett Knowles.

In the third quarter after Loyola took a 20-13 lead, Cathedral cut its deficit to one point on Xavier Dangerfield’s 34-yard touchdown run.

The victory improved Loyola’s record to 2-0, and Cathedral dipped to 0-2. The Ramblers will play their first home game Friday night, Sept. 4, against St. Rita.
