Police recover vehicle reportedly involved in murder of Skokie man

Local authorities reportedly have located a vehicle they suspect is tied to the recent fatal shooting of a Skokie man and are now processing it for evidence.

Skokie Police Sgt. Brandi Shelton in an email this week to The Record said the car’s recovery is the latest update on the investigation into the homicide of 21-year-old Jordan M. Buelvas, who was fatally shot on May 19 outside his home in the 9000 block of LaCrosse Avenue.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force utilized information from automatic license-plate readers to help them identify and locate the suspect vehicle “in another jurisdiction,” Shelton said in an email to The Record.

She continued that a forensics team processed the vehicle for physical evidence and submitted that evidence to a laboratory for analysis. Police are continuing their investigation, Shelton said, and will release more information when it becomes “available and appropriate to share.”

Early on the morning of May 19, a neighbor described to The Record hearing three loud “booms” and seeing a man with what appeared to be a gunshot wound lying in the road in the 9000 block of LaCrosse Avenue.

Emergency personnel responded around 6:19 a.m. and rendered first aid to Buelvas, who died later that day in a local hospital. The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Police said last month that a preliminary investigation showed “no known threat to the public” but declined to provide more information. Shelton informed The Record on May 20 that “further information cannot be provided to not compromise the integrity” of the investigation.

A Skokie police report shows Buelvas was a student and Skokie resident.

A makeshift shrine located outside his small apartment building on LaCrosse Avenue on Thursday provided a glimpse into Buelvas. It included a blue poster covered in a dozen messages written in black ink with phrases like “Long live you brudda we miss you” and “See you soon.”

A woman outside Buelvas’ home identified herself as a relative of the deceased but declined to provide a comment.
