Man charged in fatal 2024 hit and run in Skokie
A year and a half after a man was killed in a hit and run in Skokie, police have announced the arrest of the suspected driver.
Skokie police arrested 69-year-old Skokie resident Umeshbhai Parikh on Monday, May 11, at the police station, according to a news release from the Skokie Police Department, and the county reportedly approved a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Skokie police did not immediately respond to The Record’s followup questions.
Parikh is scheduled to appear for a pretrial hearing on Wednesday at the Skokie Courthouse.
Just before 4 p.m. on Oct. 27, 2024, Skokie emergency personnel responded to a car-vs-pedestrian collision at Crawford Avenue and Kirk Street.
The pedestrian — later identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as Alfred Slivo, 78, of Skokie — died from injuries he sustained in the crash, and the car that struck the pedestrian fled the scene prior to police arrival.
On scene, Skokie police reportedly determined the car was traveling north on Crawford Avenue when it collided with Slivo, who was walking west across Crawford Avenue north of Kirk Street.
Authorities activated the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force’s Major Crash Assistance Team, which assisted the Skokie Police Department with the investigation, the news release says.
Skokie police asked those with any information regarding this incident to contact the Skokie Police Department.
