News Briefs: HP gets $1M for water plant; Post-office site survey; Chili cookoff on Sunday; Ill. 9th forum on Thursday
The City of Highland Park recently celebrated the receipt of $1.09 million in federal funding to upgrade its water treatment plant.
U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider presented the check to Highland Park officials.
Highland Park’s George B. Prindle Water Treatment Plant provides 30 million gallons of water per day and also serves Deerfield, Lincolnshire and Bannockburn, as well as the Fort Sheridan community.
The plant was constructed in 1930 and saw a major upgrade in 2015.
Winnetka Post Office site survey open through Feb. 28
The Village of Winnetka wants community feedback on the future of the former Winnetka Post Office home at Chestnut and Elm streets.
The post office in late 2025 vacated the property, which is a long-discussed opportunity for redevelopment.
The community survey, conducted by consultant Teska associates, is now open and closes Feb. 28.
Chili for a cause
The Backyard Barbecue Store, 535 Green Bay Road, in Wilmette is inviting the community out for a fundraising chili cookoff on Sunday, Feb. 15.
The event — from 1-4 p.m. — will support Misericordia, a North Side nonprofit that provides care and programming for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
Prizes will be given in two categories: People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice.
Entry is $20 with all proceeds going to Misericordia.
Illinois 9th candidate forum on Thursday
The League of Women Voters of Glenview-Glencoe will host a forum with the candidates for Illinois 9th Senate District from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road.
Patrick Hanley and Rachel Ruttenberg, who are competing for the Democratic nod in the November election, are set to participate.
The LWV says in a release that the forum moderator will be from outside the boundaries of the contested race, and the candidates have agreed to the format and ground rules.
Attendees can submit questions for the candidates, and questions should be generally applicable to both candidates and relate to district-specific issues.
