News Briefs: $67,000 and then some in food drive; Glencoe Village Hall nearly ready; Skokie winter market to expand
New Trier High School’s Tri-Ship raised more than $67,000 and thousands of pounds of food for the Greater Chicago Food Depository, continuing its decades-long tradition.
The virtual food drive runs in the fall and garners support online from the entire community and within the school walls with the physical food drive.
Glencoe meetings back to Village Hall
Glencoe Village Board meetings will return to their home base after a near two-year break due to numerous renovations.
Village Manager Phil Kiraly announced during the board’s Dec. 11 meeting that trustees’ next session will likely take place at Village Hall.
According to Kiraly, renovation work at Village Hall is “finally nearing its ultimate conclusion,” paving the way for the board’s coming meeting on Jan. 15 to return to council chambers.
The village in early 2024 started renovation work to the second floor of Village Hall, a project that included an extensive update to the public safety department living quarters and upgrades to the council chambers.
The public safety department updates were the first since the building was built in 1956 while upgrades to the council chambers were the first since 1992, according to the village’s website.
Due to the work, Glencoe Village Board meetings for more than a year were held at the Takiff Center.
“We’re very excited to be able to be back,” Kiraly said, noting that a “few setbacks” caused the project’s timeline to slightly extend.
Kiraly also thanked the park district for allowing the village to hold board meetings at its facility.
Renovation work occurred in two phases with the first phase focusing on improving the comfort and efficiency of the living quarters while the second phase centered on technology and environmental updates to the chambers.

Winter market growing in Year 2
The Village of Skokie announced this week that its Winter Market on Main will return for its second season with an expanded footprint.
The village says “popular demand” has led to the 40-vendor market expanding to two Main Street locations: Soul Good Coffee, 4022 Main St., and The Storefront, 4051 Main St.
The winter market will open on Sunday, Jan. 11, and will run from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on eight Sundays: Jan. 11 and 25, Feb. 1 and 22, March 15 and 29, and April 12 and 16.
The event includes live music at both locations between 9-11 a.m. and children’s activities, fire pits and s’mores during the first market of the month.
Free parking is available near the market with accessible parking behind 4051 Main St.
Visitors can use their Link card at the green Skokie Farmers’ Market tent located in front of 4051 Main St. Thanks to the Illinois Department of Human Services, shoppers can receive up to a $25 match per visit.
