Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Kit Kat McGregor, New Trier volleyball
Katherine “Kit Kat” McGregor is a senior outside/right-side hitter for the Trevians. She will play for Georgetown University after high school.
1. Do you have any prematch rituals or superstitions?
I honestly was thinking about this, and I don’t have any superstitions. We always give gifts to the younger girls (before every match), so that’s like a ritual. Then, we listen to pregame music and talk about our goals.
2. Why is Georgetown a good fit for you?
I love D.C. and I love Georgetown. I like the size of the school. I love the team. They all were very welcoming when I met them. They made me feel like part of the team. I love the coaching staff. They want to restart the program … and build a reputation. They want a good future and that was cool to see.
3. When did you know you were a volleyball player?
I think I knew when I was very young, even like 9 or 10 years old watching my sister (Maddie, 23). And I kind of knew when I was playing with older kids, like I was 10 years old on a 12-year-old team. I loved it so much and wanted to stick with it.
4. If you could try another sport, what would it be?
I think I’d play tennis. I like tennis. I think it correlates to volleyball a lot. I think I’d try an outdoor sport. I think it has a similar arm swing with the serve. I had a tennis teacher who said the sports correlate and I will always be able to pick up a tennis racket and play.
5. What is your favorite thing to do off the court?
Hang out with my friends, go to the beach. I like swimming; I have a pool. I like hanging out with my dog (Mac) outside. I very much like being outside, so summertime is a good time — go to the lake, go sailing.
6. Who is your favorite athlete?
I think my favorite athlete is Michael Phelps, because I saw something when he said he trained every single day and he always thought about what his opponents were and weren’t doing. I was talking with my parents about that, and I think he’s the best athlete of all time.
7. How did the name Kit Kat stick?
My name is Katherine and the nickname Kit Kat was given to me before I was even 1. With New Trier volleyball, when I was little and watching my sister, everyone was calling me Kit Kat. It stuck in the volleyball world. Some of my friends call me Kit Kat outside of the court. Teachers don’t call me that, but my friends do and I’ve never heard my mom call me Katherine.
8. If you’re in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?
Candy or products that I need, like hair products for game-day hair.
9. What is something people don’t know about you?
I love being the youngest child because I get to live in the house alone without my siblings, and I get to live off of their advice. I enjoy being the youngest.
10. What can this team accomplish this season?
I think we can definitely accomplish what we did last year, going to the (supersectional). … Going down state would be insane for my senior year. We are building off what we have. I think we can grow a lot. Last year we had a great team and this year is correlating to be just as good. It’s about having good competitive practices and keeping that competitiveness for games. The theme is just to compete.
