31 Trevians celebrate collegiate commitments

In what has become a semiannual tradition, New Trier High School recognized on Wednesday morning a large group of student-athletes who will continue their athletic pursuits at the collegiate level.

Surrounded by parents, teachers, coaches and teammates, 31 senior Trevians participated in the spring signing day ceremony, which, along with the school’s fall event, aligns with a signing period for college-bound student-athletes.

The event was a quick turnaround for Gaby Manzano, a track star who committed to the University of Connecticut three days earlier.

Manzano, who placed fourth in the long jump at the IHSA finals a year ago, said the recruitment process can get stressful and much of the work is on the student-athlete. Manzano had begun emailing collegiate programs last year, but as her results kept improving (up to 5.79 meters or 19 feet), the colleges — including UConn, a highly regarded Big East program — began reaching out to her.

“It feels really good. I’m really happy with my decision,” she said. “I’m really excited for next year and the next four years. … That level of competition is going to be good for me.”

Manzano’s track teammate Hannah Falk also was honored Wednesday. Falk will attend Colorado College and run track and cross-country.

The 31 Trevians join 44 celebrated in November for at least 75 college-bound New Trier student-athletes from the class of 2024, including at least 11 rowers (boys and girls), nine baseball players and six girls soccer players.
