Logan Keeter goes low again to lead Trevians back to state; NSCD also takes a sectional, HP’s Patel advances, as do LA and NT girls golfers

New Trier continued its torrid stretch of golf, matching the weather on a steamy Monday at Prairie Bluff in LaGrange.

The Trevians won the sectional tournament by 11 strokes, collectively tallying an eight-under-par 280 and placing five golfers in the top 10 and all six of its participants in the top 20 in a field of more than 100.

A few days after capturing an individual regional crown, Logan Keeter again led the way for the defending state champions. The sophomore carded a three-under 69 to tie for first place with Conant’s Nicolas Simon, who bested Keeter in a playoff.

Fellow seniors Johnny Creamean and Noah Zyung were one stroke off the lead with a two-under 70 apiece, while Connor Gray rounded out the Trevians scorers with a one-under 71. Oliver Barr (72) and Boden Rice (75) were not far behind their teammates.

New Trier has also won conference and regional championships this season and will defend their state title this weekend at the IHSA Class 3A finals, Oct. 6-7, at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington.

By finishing second and third, respectively, in the sectional on Monday, Conant and Glenbrook South will also advance to the state championships. Loyola Academy placed 10th at 26 over par and were led by Drew Southwell’s 75 and Jack Stevenson’s 79.

A bit further south, North Shore Country Day also picked up a sectional championship at Kankakee Golf Club. With a collectively 316, or 28 over par, the Winnetka school finished eight strokes up on second-place Beecher (324).

Three Raiders — Nolan Darnieder, Jonathan Wiggins and Max Greenberg Winnick — tied for 11 with six-over 78s. Tucker Sichol chipped in an 82 for NSCD, which will return to the IHSA Class 1A finals on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 6-7, at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington after a one-year hiatus. The Raiders placed second in 2021.

Highland Park golfer Kalin Patel advanced to state as an individual thanks to his two-over 74 at Mount Prospect Golf Club on Monday. The Giants Danny Klein also competed in the sectional tournament, shooting an 88.

Among the state qualifiers are New Trier’s Grace Leber (far left) and Loyola’s (starting fourth from right) Gigi Zera, Katie Magner and Abby Dimmberio.

Four local girls golfers are headed to the IHSA 3A championships thanks to their showings at the Buffalo Grove Sectional on Monday, Oct. 2.

While fourth-place Loyola Academy finished outside the state-qualifying top three, seniors Katie Magner (9th, -1), Gigi Zera (11, Even) and Abby Dimmberio (20th, +4) will represent the Ramblers at the IHSA Class 2A championships on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 6-7, at Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur.

New Trier sophomore Grace Leber finished with a one-over 75 to also qualify for state. Trevians junior Kendall Humphries-Solis carded an 86.

With a fourth-place regional finish, the Trevians did not qualify as a team for the sectional. It will be the first time since 1997 that New Trier is not competing at state.
