A Green and Gold Christmastime clash

The New Trier-Loyola hockey rivalry doesn’t need any more oomph, but it got it anyway over the weekend.

The North Shore rivals were chosen to participate in the reborn Chicago Blackhawks Rivalry Series with the boys top teams, Green and Gold, playing Saturday, Dec. 10, and the girls facing off on Sunday, Dec. 11, at Heartland Ice Arena in Lincolnwood.

In the boys matchup, Green scored early, but not often. Green took a 1-0 nothing lead within the first five minutes, but Gold scored four unanswered to take the 4-1 neutral-ice victory.

Gold’s Cole Joubert found the net to even the score late in the first. A full period later, Liam Finegan scored to give Gold a 2-1 advantage.

Loyola’s Mack Klein added a goal in the third period, and Joubert’s empty netter gave the game its final score.

Gold’s victory avenged a 1-0 loss to Green on Nov. 12, and the teams will meet again on Jan. 11 at Winnetka Ice Arena.

The next evening the girls took to the ice with New Trier earning a 2-1 victory.

Kelly Morgan scored for Loyola, but New Trier tallied in the final period to capture the win.
