Apply today for Year 4 of The Record’s free Youth in Journalism Workshop

The Record North Shore‘s Youth in Journalism Workshop is returning for a fourth year to offer at least two in-person sessions this summer.

The workshop is free for anyone age 15-22 who wants to learn more about news and journalism, whether for a future in the field or a better understanding of reporting and how it fits into your community.

There is no fee to participate, and participants will receive a $200 stipend to cover travel expenses, missed work hours and their time.

Each session of the program — the first July 20-24 and the second Aug. 3-7 — will be held over five weekdays, from 4-6 p.m. each day.

Joe Coughlin, editor in chief of The Record, will host the workshop with other industry professionals and leaders joining throughout the program. Previous guests include renowned newscasters, investigative reporters, photojournalists, first-amendment attorneys and more.

A key topic explored in the workshop is digital literacy, or knowing the difference between credible news and misinformation. The workshop will review how to identify information you can trust and information that is unreliable.

Additionally, the workshop typically covers: the relationship between AI and news, interview skills, story ideation and generation, source building and relationships, journalism ethics, media law and community reporting.

NBC reporter Patrick Fazio speaks to participants in a previous year’s workshop.

Aidan Levin, a 2025 workshop participant, said: “The workshop at The Record seems too good to be true, but it is indeed true — a free week-long seminar with snacks and drinks graciously provided, students get journalism knowledge from reporters in the local community. With a stipend to boot, even if you don’t have a keen interest in the subject, it is worth it to explore something new.”

For the second year, the Youth in Journalism Workshop is supported by the Digital Equity IMPACT Small Grants Program, which promotes digital inclusion through storytelling and community engagement. The Record’s youth workshop aligns with the program’s goal of “amplify(ing) community voices, address(ing) digital divides and creat(ing) impactful narratives that advocate for equitable digital access.”

The workshop also aligns with the mission of The Record, a nonprofit, independent community newsroom that also aims to enable a more understanding and equipped future of news consumer.
