State Swim/Dive Notebook: 9 top-10 finishes for New Trier; Ramblers and Giants also find podium

While New Trier may have just missed a team prize, the Trevians — and many other North Shore swimmers — brought home plenty of hardware from the IHSA swimming and diving championships on Saturday, Feb. 28, at FMC Natatorium in Westmont.

Hinsdale Central (251 points) won its fourth consecutive state team title, with Marmion Academy (214) and Glenbrook South (203) earning second- and third-place trophies. New Trier (189) placed fourth.

Leading the Trevians was senior diver Knox Noble, who placed second, the best finish for a New Trier diver in 17 years (Michael Ross, first place, 2009). Noble tallied 525.25 points and will graduate as the program’s record holder in both 11 dives (601.25) and six dives (362.15), records he set this season.

Noble’s counterpart, Charlie Conniff, placed ninth (450.25) at the state championships.

Another New Trier senior, Jared Goldstein, captured several medals, led by his third-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly (48.51 seconds). Goldstein also placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke and led two top-five Trevians relays: the 200 medley (1 minute 31.19 seconds) and 200 free (1:22.79).

The 200 free relay quartet (Goldstein, Charlie Sears, Teddy O’Donnell, Filip Stolar) also left a mark in New Trier’s history books. Their in-season time of 1:21.9 is a program record.

Goldstein joined with freshman Tyler Zheng, sophomore Reed Woodward and junior Stolar in the medal-winning medley relay. The Trevians also placed sixth in the 400 free relay.

New Trier freshman Sam Cast competes in the 500 free during the state championships.

Other Trevians state qualifiers were: O’Donnell 6th in the 100 fly and 14th in the 200 individual medley, sophomore Everett Pumphrey sixth in the 500 free, Sears 15th in the 200 individual medley, Stolar 12th in the 50 free, freshman Sam Cast 12 in the 500 free and 14th in the 200 free, and Zheng 16th in the 100 breaststroke.

Despite not taking home a state trophy this season, New Trier boys swim and dive have 15 this century, including eight state championships.

Swimmers from local schools Loyola Academy, Niles West and Highland Park also competed in the IHSA championships.

Ramblers seniors Velizar Filipov, Devon Bone and Tommy Gardy joined freshman Eric Miclea for a sixth-place effort in the medley relay.

Filipov also placed seven in the 100 fly and fifth in the 100 backstroke and Bone fourth in the 100 breaststroke and 13th in the 100 free.

The two were back together with Gardy and Cormac McEwen for an eighth-place finish in the 400 free relay for Loyola, which compiled 92.5 points, good enough for 10th overall.

Highland Park junior Andrew Blauer, pictured swimming in the individual medley race, also won fourth in the 100 butterfly.

The Giants junior Andrew Blauer finished fourth in the 100 fly at 48.64 seconds, added a 12th-place result in the individual medley and, along with Josh Guerrero, Kyle Castle and Juan Castillo, helped the Giants 200 free relay to 14th.

Senior Andrew Cheung led Niles West (45 points, 13th) with a runnerup finish in the 100 fly. He also placed 13th in the backstroke and swam in two state-qualifying relays.

The Wolves Stefan Tadic was 11th in the 500 free and Nicholas Dao was 15th in the 100 breaststroke.
