Elderly woman injured after fire breaks out in Skokie apartment building
An 84-year-old woman was seriously injured on Monday during a fire in a multi-family apartment building near Old Orchard mall.
The Skokie Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at the residential building in the 9500 block of Bronx Place at around 10:08 p.m. on Dec. 8, according to a news release from the village.
First responders evacuated the building, which contains 80 units, Skokie officials said.
On arrival, police and fire crews found heavy smoke conditions on the third floor of the building. The fire reportedly was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes and was contained to one residential unit on the third floor.
An 84-year-old resident of the building was reportedly injured and transported to an area hospital “in serious condition.”
All other residents were assisted back into their homes after the firefighting operation concluded.
All other residential units in the building, with the exception of the unit on the third floor, are still habitable, according to the Skokie Fire Department.
A damage estimate is not yet available, and the fire remains under investigation, the department says.
The fire alarm was upgraded during the firefighting operations, bringing in “mutual aid assistance and station coverage” from neighboring fire departments.
An Emergency Medical Service Box Alarm was also requested during the fire due to the number of civilian occupants and weather conditions, the Skokie Fire Department said.
Fire Departments from Evanston, Deerfield, Des Plaines, Glenview, Glencoe, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, Park Ridge, Wilmette and Winnetka assisted with the call, according to the release.
