Chicago man allegedly ran over, attempted to stab fellow solicitor in Wilmette
Wilmette police officers aided in the arrest of a Chicago man on Thursday who allegedly attempted to run over and stab a solicitor along Green Bay Road last week.
The Village of Wilmette says in a press release that Kevin Siduan Mora-Canelones was charged with attempted murder for an incident that occurred Friday morning, Oct. 30, in the 100 block of Green Bay Road.
Mora-Canelones and the alleged victim reportedly were in the same area around 9:45 a.m. soliciting money on the sidewalk when Mora-Canelones attempted to strike the other individual with his car in a parking lot and on the sidewalk, according to the release.
He then allegedly ran over the victim’s hand, exited the car and attempted to stab the victim before fleeing the area by 9:53 a.m.
Police believe the dispute stemmed from a conflict between families.
Wilmette detectives identified and located the alleged offender in Chicago by 2 p.m. Friday, the release says. Officers reportedly surveilled Mora-Canelones for six days.
An arrest warrant reportedly was issued on Nov. 3 and two days later, the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force joined Wilmette officers in arresting Mora-Canelones without incident, according to the press release.
“Peaceful solicitation is a constitutionally protected right under the First Amendment,” Wilmette Police Chief Michael Robinson said in a statement. “The Wilmette Police Department is committed to protecting the rights of all individuals.
“We commend the responding officers and investigators who, over the past several days, aggressively investigated this criminal activity to ensure a safe community for everyone.”
