No repeat for New Trier — but a seventh consecutive trophy

As reigning state champions, New Trier boys golf wanted more out of the IHSA Class 3A tournament.

But at the same time, the Trevians proved their want was more on the event’s second day, Saturday, Oct. 10, when New Trier tied for the best team score of the day (292, 4-over par) and climbed from sixth place to third, securing a state trophy for the seventh straight state tournament.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the resilience and grit our guys showed across the two-day tournament,” Trevians coach John Nasshan said. “That was deserving of the podium. I couldn’t be more impressed with how they finished the tournament out.”

The Trevians (16-over par) finished a stroke back of Hersey (+15) and 11 off state champ Evanston (+5) when things wrapped up on Saturday at the Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington.

Evanston nabbed its first team state title behind star junior Lester Low (-5, second place). New Trier, Hersey and Evanston all came out of the same sectional.

New Trier senior Liam Kelly, who placed fifth at the IHSA Class 3A championships, holds the team’s third-place trophy.

Senior and state regular Liam Kelly led the Trevians with a fifth-place finish, carding an even-par 144 over the two days; however, Kelly was 3-under par on Day 2 to lead the Trevians’ comeback charge.

It is Kelly’s third straight All-State finish. He won the tournament as a sophomore and placed third individually when the Trevs won state in 2025.

“His ability to battle back is just superior to his peers,” Nasshon said. “He doesn’t get down on himself. He stays patient when it’s really hard to stay patient. … He always knows he has the game and has that trust in himself.”

Fellow senior Ezra Primosch offered a consistent performance, shooting a 74 (+2) and 73 (+1) to tie for 11th place. Junior Jack Gill (73, 78) and sophomore Will Cimaroli (78, 75) also scored for New Trier both days.

Junior Mack Tapp bounced back in a big way Saturday with a 75 — improving 11 strokes from his first-day round.

“Liam Kelly was just super impressive; Ezra Primosch … is someone we can count on. His leadership throughout the weekend, guys fed off that,” Nasshon said. “Even though no one was happy where we were after the first day, no one was panicking. They knew they could come out on Day 2 and give it their best and they did that.”

Nasshon said his team just got off to an uncharacteristic “shaky start” on the tournament’s first day and called golf an “imperfect game that can snowball on you real quick.”

He said the Trevians may have been in last place through the event’s first seven holes, before turning things around to land in sixth place Friday and then surge to third on Day 2.

The season was Nasshon’s first as head coach, but he’s been with New Trier boys golf for 11 seasons and was an important ingredient in the Trevians recent championship runs.

The Trevians seven straight state trophies consist of two thirds (2026, 2024), two seconds (2021, 2019) and three championships (2025, 2023, 2022). New Trier also won four straight runnerup finishes between 2013-’16.

Another top-5 finish for New Trier girls

Behind seniors Molly Tir and Charlotte Giczewski, New Trier girls golf wrapped up its season with a fifth-place finish at the IHSA Class 2A finals Oct. 10-11 at Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur.

Tir finished in 20th place with a 6-over par 150, while Giczewski was tied for 32nd with her 10-over 154.

Sophomore Nadiya Kundu (+18, 162), junior Maggie Mueller (+22, 166) and sophomore Ava Bednyak (+29, 173) all contributed to the Trevians’ final scoring.

The result was the fourth top-10 state finish in the last six seasons for New Trier, which placed third in 2025. That was the Trevians first state trophy (top 3) since 2017, when they won the state championship.

Stevenson ran away with the championship trophy in Class 2A, with a collective 4-over par (580), 15 strokes better than runnerup Lincoln-Way East (+19). Barrington (+38), Hinsdale Central (+45) and New Trier (+54) followed.
