Rescheduled Record Open finds clear skies and significant support

Second time was a charm for the The Record Open VI.

Sunny skies and ideal temperatures graced the makeup date, Thursday, Oct. 8, at The Evans at Canal Shores, for The Record’s annual charity golf outing, which originally was rained out on Sept. 30.

Supporters of local nonprofit newsroom The Record North Shore took to the local golf course for 18 holes, food, drinks, contests and giveaways to raise funds powering independent community reporting.

“The funds we raise definitely help our everyday community coverage, this outing is special because we bring together friends and neighbors,” said Joe Coughlin, The Record’s editor in chief. “And I am including myself and our staff in that — we get to hang out with our friends and supporters and we love it.”

On the course are the day’s winners (left to right): Andy Schaefer, Steve Weir, Andy Kulick and Andy Warner.

The quartet of Steve Weir, Andy Warner, Andy Kulick and Andy Schaefer collaborated on a low-round 9-under par to win the main competition for the third time in six years. The group graciously donated the cash prize back to The Record.

Other winners included Colin O’Donaghue and Diana Ritchie for their Longest Drives. Andy Kulick was Closest to the Pin.

After the competitions on the course, the participants gathered near the clubhouse for post-round drinks and dinner from Bluestone, out of Evanston.

New this year, many competed in a separate longest drive — using a marshmallow.

The event’s title sponsor was Optima, while Ravinia Festival was the welcome sponsor.

Hole sponsors were: Hofherr Meat Co., Ballyhoo Hospitality, Stormy’s Tavern and Grille, ICHI by Torino Ramen, Chicago Union Cares, North Shore Civic Club, Go Green Wilmette,

All of it came together for more than $5,000 in net contributions for The Record — funds that will go directly into responsible local reporting for the community.
