Minor injuries result from car crashing into Hometown Coffee

Multiple people were injured when a car crashed into a popular Glencoe cafe on Tuesday morning, according to Glencoe Public Safety.

Public Safety Deputy Chief Andrew Perley said that around 10:28 a.m. a juvenile driving a Ford Bronco SUV accidentally accelerated forward from a parking space and into the facade of Hometown Coffee & Juice, 700 Vernon Ave.

While the car did not strike anybody, Perley said, four people sustained minor injuries in the incident with two of them going to the hospital. He said the injuries were caused by broken glass resulting from the car’s collision with the building, which reportedly caused damage to the brickwork and shattered at least two large panes of glass.

At the time of the crash, Perley said, three of the injured individuals were outside the restaurant, while the other was inside.

Hometown, which has multiple North Shore locations, is on the northwest corner of Park and Vernon avenues in Glencoe, and business owner Lou Rubin said the crash happened on the Park side of the cafe, opposite the front entrance.

Rubin said Hometown would be closed for the rest of Tuesday, Sept. 22, but plans to reopen on Wednesday. A Village building inspector reportedly cleared the damaged restaurant for normal operation.

“It’s a miracle that no one was seriously injured,” Rubin said in a message to The Record. “… We’re incredibly appreciative of all those who rushed to help.”
