Portion of Winnetka building’s facade comes crashing down

Limestone blocks on a Green Bay Road building collapsed on Thursday afternoon, crashing onto the sidewalk below, according to the Village of Winnetka.

The Village reported on social media that no one was injured in the incident, the cause of which reportedly is under investigation.

The incident reportedly occurred between 3:30-4 p.m. at 924 Green Bay Road, a building that houses the restaurant Spirit Elephant, which was closed at the time. On Thursdays, according to it website, Spirit Elephant opens at 4:30 p.m.

The falling blocks, which were about 15-20 feet off the ground, ripped down a portion of the restaurant’s awning and shattered multiple front windows.

The restaurant closed for the rest of the day, according to an Instagram post.

Scott Mangum, the Village of Winnetka’s community development director, said a structural engineer associated with the property owner removed the facade’s remaining limestone blocks on Thursday evening.

The Village reportedly closed southbound Green Bay Road during cleanup.
