Record Roundup: How the North Shore will honor the fallen this Memorial Day
With a long weekend here, the North Shore has readied observations in tribute to military members who died while serving the United States. With parades, 5Ks and remembrance ceremonies, Monday morning and early afternoon, May 25, will be filled with ways to remember the fallen.
Monday’s weather forecast shows warm and dry weather, with temperatures rising into the 80s by mid afternoon under clear skies.
WILMETTE
Wilmette’s annual Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10:30 a.m Monday, May 25, from St. Joseph School at Ridge Road and Lake Avenue. The parade will travel east from Lake to Park Avenue before concluding at Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Ave.
A memorial ceremony will honor veterans on the Village Hall Green following the parade.
Because of the parade foot traffic, roads will be temporarily closed along the route from approximately 10:20 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wilmette and Central avenues will be closed until the ceremony’s conclusion.
Before the parade begins, Saints Joseph and Francis Xavier Parish will host the annual Jubilee Jog 5K. Proceeds of the race will go toward the STC Food Pantry, New Trier Township Food Pantry and Sister José Women’s Shelter.

SKOKIE
Skokie is hosting its Memorial Day observance beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday on the Village Green, 5155 Oakton St.
Mayor Ann Tennes and Fire Chief Nicholas Eschner will provide remarks at the ceremony, while local Scouts are set to deliver the Pledge of Allegiance, and Niles North student Kristyna Semchuk will perform the national anthem.
The Skokie Fire and Police department honor guards will also present a rifle salute.
WINNETKA
The Winnetka Park District in collaboration with New Trier VFW Post 4831 will also host its 99th Memorial Day Parade and Observance on Monday. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on the corner of Glendale Avenue and Elm Street before heading east toward Village Green Park for a veteran ceremony, planned to begin at 10:30 a.m.
The ceremony will honor veterans from Winnetka who died in the Civil War, the World Wars, Korean War and Vietnam War. U.S. Army veteran Cpt. Matt Schacman is set to deliver opening and closing remarks, and Marine 2nd Lt. Philip Nied will offer this year’s address.
The ceremony will feature musical performances from Bill Porter Band, The Sheridan Singers and Emma Guerra Pastrana, of North Shore County Day School.
The event will feature a rifle salute as well.

GLENCOE
The Village of Glencoe and the Glencoe Historical Society will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday. The event will be held at Veterans’ Memorial Park, 299 Park Ave, next to Union Church.
Village President Howard Roin is set to speak at the event.
In the case of inclement weather, the event will be at the Takiff Center, 999 Green Bay Road.
HIGHLAND PARK

Highland Park’s annual Memorial Day Observance begins at 11 a.m. on Monday at Highland Park High School, 433 Vine Ave.
The event will feature a bell ceremony honoring Highland Park veterans who have died during their service. Sonia Marie Martin, U.S. Army retired staff sergeant, will be honored as a Hero Among Us.
Highland Park Poet Laureate and retired Air Force Major Laura Joyce-Hubbard will offer a reading, and the Highland Park High School’s band and choir will also perform.
The observance was planned with the American Legion North Shore Post #738, Jewish War Veterans Post #29, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4737.

HIGHWOOD
Led by American Legion Post 501, Highwood’s Memorial Day activities begain at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 24, at City Hall, 7 Highwood Ave.
After the ceremony, the Highwood Historical Society is welcoming visitors inside City Hall to view a display of photographs honoring fallen Highwood veterans who gave their lives in the line of duty.
KENILWORTH
Per tradition, Kenilworth observed its Memorial Day a week early, on Sunday, May 17. The village hosted its 107th annual walk/run and Memorial Day Parade, followed by a ceremony.
Afterward, the Kenilworth Historical Society and the Kenilworth Police Department hosted open houses for the community.
Visitors at the Kenilworth Historical Society were able to view the facility’s grand opening of the new exhibit, Deep Dive: A History of Kenilworth’s Water Infrastructure and Lakefront.
