Highland Park crash kills 2 — including 1-year-old

Two people are dead following a car crash in Highland Park on Saturday afternoon, according to the City of Highland Park.

The city’s police department responded to the crash at 3:05 p.m. at the intersection of Route 41 and Park Avenue, where a car traveling north on Route 41 reportedly collided with a car turning left toward southbound Route 41.

As a result of the crash, three individuals were transported to the hospital, and two of them — 73-year-old Joan Scaccia and 21-month-old Andre Paz, of Round Lake — were pronounced dead, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner’s office report stays that Scaccia was turning left onto Route 41 when the car traveling north, of which Andre was a passenger in a child’s carseat, struck her car.

Both Scarria and Andre were transported to Highland Park Hospital, where they died in the emergency room, according to the report.

The intersection was shut down for at least four hours, according to the City’s social media alerts.
