Pedestrian dies when struck by Yellow Line train in Skokie

A woman was killed on Thursday afternoon when she was struck by a Chicago Transit Authority train at a railroad crossing in Skokie, according to police and the medical examiner.

Skokie emergency personnel responded to the 8400 block of Niles Center Road at 12:36 p.m. on March 12 for a report of a pedestrian-vs-train incident involving the Yellow Line, says a news release posted on the Skokie Police Department’s social media

Skokie police officers’ preliminary investigation reportedly determined that the adult pedestrian went onto the tracks and was struck by a southbound train. The Cook County medical examiner ruled the death a suicide.

The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital for “life-threatening injuries sustained from the collision and succumbed to the injuries,” the news release states.

The investigation reportedly indicated the gates and signals were functioning properly.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force’s Major Crash Assistance Team was activated and is assisting the Skokie Police Department with this ongoing investigation, the release stated.

Skokie Police closed Niles Center Road but reopened it shortly after 5 p.m., and CTA services were delayed related to this investigation.
