Police Reports: More than a dozen car break-ins in one night in Winnetka; police warn of armed offenders in area
The following reports were pulled from the latest incident summaries provided by law enforcement departments in our coverage area (Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland Park, Northfield, Kenilworth, Glencoe and Skokie).
WILMETTE
Jan. 20
• Wilmette police in a release warned residents about a recent increase in car thefts and burglaries in the area, adding that “in several recent cases nearby, outside of Wilmette, suspects have been armed and fired shots at property owners when confronted.”
In a followup message, the department mentioned a Jan. 7 incident in Morton Grove when alleged car burglars fired four gunshots toward a resident who confronted them. Two weeks later, on Jan. 25, a homeowner was shot after confronting two alleged car burglars at 2:44 a.m.
Jan. 23
• Items reportedly were stolen from a home in the 1200 block of Greenwood Avenue.
WINNETKA
Jan. 22
• Two cars reportedly were burglarized in the 1000 block of Cherry Street.
• A car reportedly was broken into in the 1000 block of Ash Street.
• Phone chargers, a lawn chair and a jacket reportedly were stolen from an unlocked car overnight in the 1100 block of Oak Street.
• A attempt reportedly was made to illegally enter a locked car between 3:32-3:37 a.m. in the 1000 block of Cherry Street.
• A jar of coins reportedly was stolen when two unlocked cars were broken into in the 1200 block of Forest Glen Drive S.
• A pair of gloves reportedly was stolen when two cars were broken into in the 400 block of Birch Street.
• A coat reportedly was stolen overnight from an unlocked car in a driveway in the 1300 block of Forest Glen Drive N.
• At least three unlocked cars reportedly were broken into overnight in the 900 block of Forest Glen Drive W.
• A diaper bag reportedly was stolen (and later recovered nearby) overnight from an unlocked car in the 1200 block of Asbury Avenue.
• Jewelry valued at more than $5,000 reportedly was stolen between 3-3:20 p.m. after individuals deceptively gained access to the home.
Jan. 24
• A jacket reportedly was stolen overnight Jan. 22 from an unlocked car in the 1000 block of Cherry Street.
GLENCOE
Jan. 19
• Various valuables reportedly were stolen from moving boxes in the 1000 block of Linda Lane.
HIGHLAND PARK
Jan. 23
• Nearly $3,000 in merchandise reportedly was stolen on Jan. 22 from Ulta, 135 Skokie Valley Road.
Jan. 22
• Approximately $1,000 was taken between Jan. 6-7 from a purse located in a residence in the 1000 block of Central Avenue.
Jan. 20
• Items reportedly were taken between Jan. 5-6 from a home in the 1000 block of Central Avenue.
NORTHFIELD
Jan. 22
• Police responded to a call of a physical altercation in the 200 block of Waukegan Road; however, police say, neither involved party wanted to press charges.
KENILWORTH
Jan. 22
• An unlocked car reportedly was stolen overnight from a driveway in the 500 block of Sheridan Road and later recovered abandoned in the 1000 block of Ash Street in Winnetka.
• An unlocked car reportedly was broken into in the 7000 block of Maclean Avenue.
• An unlocked car reportedly was broken into in the 300 block of Sterling Road.
SKOKIE
Jan. 22
• A car reportedly was stolen around 5:50 a.m. from the 8100 block of Keating Avenue.
• A car reportedly was burglarized sometime between Jan. 21- 22 in the 8200 block of Keating Avenue.
• A car reportedly was burglarized sometime between Jan. 21-22 in the 8300 block of Kilpatrick Avenue.
Jan. 21
• A building reportedly was burglarized sometime between Jan. 9-21 in the 8800 block of Lavergne Avenue.
Jan. 20
• Property reportedly was stolen from a car on Jan. 20 in the 8700 block of Kimball Avenue.
Jan. 18
• Two cars reportedly were burglarized sometime between Jan. 17-18 in the 9500 block of Skokie Road Boulevard.
Jan. 16
• Property reportedly was stolen from a car sometime between Jan. 15-16 in the 8600 block of Drave Avenue.
• A car reportedly was burglarized sometime between Jan. 15-16 in the 8500 block of Kimball Avenue.
Jan. 15
• A car reportedly was stolen on Jan. 15 from the 9000 block of Forestview Road.
