How to get involved in honor of MLK Jr. on Monday
Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy is celebrated with a National Day of Service, and the North Shore comes through with plenty of opportunities to get you involved.

IN WINNETKA … The Volunteer Center is hosting its 22nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Community House, 620 Lincoln St. The free and all-ages event will feature volunteers working on hands-on projects to support local nonprofits. The projects include: no-sew fleece blankets for Betsy’s Blankets, cards of gratitude for military veterans, dental hygiene kits for North Shore Community Partners, and books and buds bags for Share Our Space.

IN HIGHLAND PARK … the 17 annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service — a collaborative program from the City of Highland Park, its Human Relations Advisory Group and the Park District of Highland Park — is from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Monday at Park Fitness, 1207 Park Ave. West, where several service projects will get underway and service organizations will be present. Township District 113 Superintendent Dr. Chala Holland will offer the keynote address on educational equity, and the Joel Hall Dancers will perform.
A drive-in donation drive is scheduled between 9-10:30 a.m. in the facility’s parking lot, where donors are encouraged to drop off a variety of items, from foodstuffs to new and gently worn shoes to bicycles. Find a full list of items and organizations here.
IN GLENCOE … North Shore United Methodist Church, 213 Hazel Ave., is welcoming community members of all ages from 10 a.m.-noon to create plastic sleeping mats to support unhoused individuals in Chicagoland. IN SKOKIE … participate in a community service project with the family starting at 2 p.m. Monday at the Skokie Public Library, 5215 Oakton St. Registration is required.
From noon-2 p.m. Monday, come by the Devonshire Cultural Center, 4400 Greenwood St. for a MLK Jr. Day Soul Food Celebration, an interactive culinary class where participants (age 16 and up) will create a soul food feast courtesy of Koala’s Kitchen. Registration is $36 for Skokie residents/$45 for nonresidents.
