This time, Gordon’s big opener comes with a Highland Park win

For the second straight opening day, Highland Park receiver Lucas Gordon recorded three touchdown receptions.

This year, though, the scores came with a happier ending: a 21-16 Giants’ victory on Friday, Aug. 29, on the road against Leyden.

Gordon snagged a 2-yard touchdown to give his team a 7-3 lead in the first quarter and added touchdown catches of 21 and 34 yards in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, as Highland Park pulled away from the Eagles 21-3.

Junior Gustav Crane tossed all three passes and finished his night 8-of-12 passing for 152 yards. An even 100 of those went to Gordon, who is in his fourth varsity season with the Giants.

Crane added 37 yards rushing, while sophomore John Boman had a team-high 45 rushing yards.

Leyden added two fourth-quarter scores, but with the last one coming with just 20 seconds to play, it was too little too late.

Highland Park got interceptions from Jesse Barnes and Shamus Ugolini. Gordon was the co-leader in tackles with 8, including two for loss; Gabe Leon also recorded 8 tackles and Marco Volpentesta 7. Jack Adess had 6 tackles to go with a blocked extra kick and pass deflection.

The Giants’ victory avenges a loss to the Eagles to start the 2024 season.

This story will be updated over the weekend with more game details and quotes
