News Briefs: ‘Show and Tell for Grownups’ on Wednesday; Yards That Work tour on Sunday; new golf-course restaurant open now

Eight writers with deep ties to Glencoe will, on Wednesday, July 9, at the Glencoe Public Library, read their essays from “Storied Stuff: Show and Tell for Grownups,” a collection edited by Evanston writers Steve and Sharon Fiffer.

The presentation is set for 7–8 p.m. as an extension of the Fiffers’ project, which, among other things, highlights a childhood diary, a handprint memorialized in clay, presidential cufflinks, a Picasso plate and notes from a long-ago family meeting conducted according to “Robert’s Rules of Order.”

“Storied Stuff” is a collection of more than 100 essays that the Fiffers gathered on their website, storied-stuff.com, a pandemic creation for fellow writers and nonwriters to share their writing.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at Wednesday’s event, with all proceeds going to the Glencoe Library, 320 Park Ave.

The event is free, but registration is required by clicking here.

Winnetka Sustainable Yard Tour on Sunday

Go Green Winnetka will feature four local yards during its fifth Yards That Work Sustainable Yard Tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 13.

Guests can expect:

• Native plants: how local flora supports birds and pollinators
• Fruit and veggie gardens: the impact of homegrown produce
• Rain barrels and bioswales: clever ways to manage stormwater
• Home compost systems: how to turn kitchen scraps into garden gold

According to Go Green Winnetka, tour hosts will share their experiences and wisdom, showing off what works for them and hopefully inspiring others with ideas to make their own yards a sustainable paradise.

The tour is free and self-guided, rain or shine. Pre-registration is requested. For more details, visit gogreenwinnetka.org.

New restaurant opens at Sunset Valley

The Clubhouse at Sunset Valley opened in June at Sunset Valley Golf Club, 1390 Sunset Road in Highland Park.

According to the Park District of Highland Park, The Clubhouse is the latest creation of Relish Catering Kitchen and its “from-scratch” approach.

The restaurant serves a variety of burgers, sandwiches, salads and more, with the opportunity to dine on a trellised patio with a course view, seating options and fire pits.

“It’s a relaxing spot for lunch and dinner, and the stunning sunsets are an off-menu extra special treat when sipping your favorite beverage or one of our signature cocktails,” according to the district.

The Clubhouse, which also offers catering and special event opportunities, is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays through Thursdays, 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.
