Three months later, Winnetka shootout remains unresolved
A Winnetka family is growing frustrated with local police following an attempted burglary in May that resulted in dozens of gunshots outside of their home on Sheridan Road.
No one was reported injured in the shootout on Memorial Day, May 27, when an alleged burglar and male homeowner exchanged gunfire, and the case remains under investigation, according to Winnetka police.
In an Aug. 20 email to the Winnetka Police Department, reviewed by The Record, the female homeowner wrote, “There has been zero resolution or communication to us about any real progress in the case.”
The woman expressed concern for her and her family’s safety with the alleged offenders “on the loose.”
Per their request, citing safety concerns, The Record is choosing to withhold the name of the family members.
Deputy Chief Dylan Majcher declined to share details of the investigation with The Record, saying doing so “may compromise the investigation.” He did report that the department is reviewing records that were obtained from “legal orders” related to the case.
In the early hours of Memorial Day, May 27, in the 400 block of Sheridan Road, a homeowner armed with a gun interrupted multiple people attempting to steal the family’s cars, according to police information.
One of the alleged offenders also drew a firearm and reportedly shot at the homeowner, who then returned gunfire while seeking cover, police said. More than 30 shell casings were recovered from the scene, but police said it is unclear how many were fired by the suspects and by the homeowner.
Two of the suspects drove away in a car while the third fled on foot, according to police. According to the family, two of the suspects were wearing masks and hoodies.
