More than 30 shell casings recovered after Winnetka homeowner exchanges gunfire with alleged car thieves, police say

A Winnetka homeowner and an alleged car thief exchanged gunfire early Monday morning, according to an alert from the Village of Winnetka.

No one was reported injured in the incident, in which three individuals reportedly attempted to steal a car from a residence in the 400 block of Sheridan Road.

Police say the homeowner interrupted the attempted theft and one of the alleged offenders fired first leading to an exchange of gunshots. Police told The Record that more than 30 shell casings were recovered from the scene; however, it is not yet clear how many were fired by the offenders and by the homeowner.

It is unclear how many shots were fired. Citing the ongoing nature of the investigation, Winnetka police declined to provide further information.

Two of the offenders fled in a vehicle while another fled on foot, the release says. According to witnesses, two of the subjects were wearing masks and hoodies.

Sheridan Road remains closed between Willow Road and Ash Street as of 10 a.m.

The Village believes the incident is isolated and it will not impact the Memorial Day parade and ceremony scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
