Teen arrested in connection with robbery of Wilmette jogger

Local authorities on Tuesday arrested one of two alleged offenders in an armed robbery earlier this month in Wilmette.

An 18-year-old Chicago resident is charged in connection with the crime after being apprehended by Skokie and Lincolnwood police on Tuesday, May 14. The arrestee reportedly was in a stolen car, according to a release from the Wilmette Police Department.

According to the release, the individual was in possession of a handgun that matched a description of the firearm used to a rob a Wilmette jogger of her phone on May 4. The teenager also reportedly made statements that “established his involvement” in the crime, police say.

The arrested individual was charged with armed robbery, possession of a stolen car and unlawful use of a weapon, the release says.

Police are still looking for a second subject in relation to the May 4 robbery, during which a woman jogging near Beechwood and Hunter avenues reportedly was robbed at gunpoint around 9 a.m. that Saturday.

At the time, police said they were seeking two male offenders in a black sedan who were wearing bandanas. One of the offenders reportedly pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her cellphone. It is unclear if the arrested individual was the one who pointed the firearm.

Police reported that the woman’s phone was discarded and recovered. The suspect vehicle reportedly was also recovered in Chicago.

According to a statement from Wilmette police, investigators identified the subject vehicle using home surveillance footage and the village’s automated license-plate readers. The vehicle reportedly was stolen out of Chicago.

Wilmette police are asking anyone with information related to the incident to call (847) 256-1200.
