Jogger’s phone reportedly stolen at gunpoint in Wilmette

(Updated with more information at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7)

A woman jogging near Indian Hill country club reportedly was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday morning in Wilmette.

A press release from the Wilmette Police Department says officers responded around 9 a.m. to Beechwood and Hunter avenues — a residential area in north Wilmette and just to the south of the country club — for a report of an armed robbery.

Two male offenders in a black sedan and wearing bandanas over their face approached a 44-year-old woman who was jogging on the sidewalk, according to the release. One of the offenders reportedly pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her cellphone. The alleged offenders took the phone and fled, and the jogger was not physically injured, police say.

“This is unusual activity for the area and for Wilmette as a whole,” Deputy Chief Michael Robinson said.

Police reported that the woman’s phone was discarded and recovered. The suspect vehicle reportedly was also recovered in Chicago.

According to a statement from Wilmette police, investigators identified the subject vehicle using home surveillance footage and the village’s automated license-plate readers. The vehicle reportedly was stolen out of Chicago.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and they are searching for two males in their late teens.

Wilmette police are asking anyone with information related to the incident to call (847) 256-1200.
