Police Reports: $18,000 theft from computer scam, attempted robbery of gas-station ATM

These reports were pulled from the latest police summaries provided by departments in our coverage area (Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland Park, Northfield, Kenilworth and Glencoe).

WILMETTE

Feb. 17

• Cash and jewelry reportedly were stolen between 11 a.m.-7 p.m. from a home in the 700 block of Lamon Avenue.

Feb. 16

• A resident reportedly was scammed out of $18,000 after clicking a fraudulent computer alert that said the resident’s bank account was compromised. Reportedly upon instruction, the resident downloaded software and called a phone number to a person who directed the resident to withdraw the funds and deposit them into Bitcoin accounts for protection.

Feb. 14

• Cash and electronics reportedly were stolen between Feb. 11-14 from a home in the 2300 block of Old Glenview Road.

• A fake ID reportedly containing a resident’s personal information was used in Iowa to remove $2,500 from the resident’s bank account.

Feb. 12

• An unlocked car with the keys inside reportedly was stolen from the 1900 block of Thornwood Avenue. The vehicle reportedly was later recovered on Feb. 13 in Chicago.

• A resident’s private information reportedly was fraudulently used to recent a property in Texas beginning in June 2021. The resident reportedly was notified of the scheme after receiving a collections notice for $36,000.

• A bicycle reportedly was stolen between 2-3:30 p.m. from the 1900 block of Schiller Avenue.

WINNETKA

Feb. 10

• A bag with a wallet, passport, cash and more reportedly was stolen from 7-11, 88 Green Bay Road.

Feb. 8

• An individual purporting to be from Apple reportedly removed nearly $1,000 from a resident’s Venmo account.

Feb. 7

• More than $2,000 in fraudulent purchases reportedly were made on a resident’s credit card.

• An individual reportedly attempted to use counterfeit money at Peet’s Coffee, 817 Elm St.

GLENCOE

No reports between Feb. 7-14 that meet The Record’s standards for publication.

HIGHLAND PARK

Feb. 9

• A car reportedly was stolen from the 2700 block of Skokie Valley Road.

Feb. 8

• A package valued at more than $800 reportedly was stolen from the 500 block of Michigan Avenue.

NORTHFIELD

Feb. 11

• Multiple individuals reportedly attempted to steal an ATM overnight from the Shell gas station, 469 Ridge Road. The store’s front-door windows reportedly were smashed in.

Feb. 10

• A customer of Mariano’s reportedly began throwing items around 9:52 p.m. at the store, 1822 Willow Road, after a store employee noticed the customer not scanning all of their items.

Feb. 8

• An individual reportedly assaulted a clerk at the Shell gas station, 469 Sunset Ridge Road, threatening to harm the clerk several times. The individual reportedly was located and asked not to return to the property.

KENILWORTH

Feb. 12

• A pair of sunglasses reportedly was stolen overnight from an unlocked car in the 300 block of Richmond Road.
