First Central Suburban girls wrestling title goes to New Trier; Trevians and Ramblers boys combine for 4 league champs

Behind three individual championships, New Trier girls wrestling on Saturday, Jan. 20, claimed the inaugural team title at the Central Suburban League championships in Highland Park.

With girls wrestling on the rise in Illinois, the IHSA debuted a state series for the sport in 2023. The first CSL meet was also last season; however, this year, a team champ was crowned as well as individuals.

The Trevians Sunny Aitzemkour (100 pounds), Jillian Giller (140) and Nina Aceves (155) earned league championships, each of them pinning their foe in their title matches.

New Trier’s Lola Biano (115) and Katelynn Parsawasdi (125) added second-place finishes and Zoe Lee (120) a third-place result as the Trevians racked up 142 team points, coming in ahead of Maine East (127 points) and Maine West (118).

Highland Park had two league champs: Riley Moore (125) and Clara Ugaz (135). Moore was named the CSL North’s most outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

The Giants Lexi Rosenthal (170) placed third, and HP finished with 60 team points.

On the boys side, New Trier’s Tagg Miller (150) and Bailey Cornelison (175) won their respective brackets to earn league championships.

Miller (31-6), his bracket’s top seed, pinned all three of his opponents, including Oliver Quiros, of Niles North, in the first period of the championship bout.

Cornelison was his bracket’s No. 2 seed and recorded a technical fall (15-0) and two first-period pins to win it. His championship victory came against 175’s top wrestler Kieran O’Sullivan, of Glenbrook North, whom he pinned at the end of the first period.

The Trevians, who placed fifth as a team, also got third-place finishes from Micah Eickbush (144) and Julian Slaastad (165), while Matthew Miralles finished fourth at 120.

Highland Park picked up two third-place results: Jaiden Casillas (113) and Alex Gudgeon (106).

The Chicago Catholic League also held its league championships Saturday, Jan. 20, when Loyola Academy placed fifth as a team.

Senior Quinn Herbert (190) and sophomore Kai Calcutt (215) were Catholic League champions. Gavin Pardilla was the runnerup at 120, James Hemmila placed third at 106 and Joey Herbert fourth at 285.

Boys wrestling postseason continues on Feb. 3, when New Trier and Loyola will compete in the Glenbrook South Regional and Highland Park in the Stevenson Regional.

The girls regional round is on Friday, Jan. 26, when New Trier, Loyola and Highland Park wrestlers will compete at Round Lake High School.
