Update: Missing Northfield man found safe, returns home

Enrique Vazquez, a Northfield man missing since Jan. 8, is back home safe, according to the Northfield Police Department.

The 72-year-old reportedly walked into a church in Elgin on Monday evening, when he was identified and his family notified.

“He gave his name and they were able to find out he was missing from all the news we put out,” Northfield Cmdr. Thomas Hanus said. “Sure enough (the Elgin Police Department) called us and the family brought him back home.”

Vazquez reportedly went missing at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, from his home in Northfield, and the Nrothfield Police Department circulated his information on Friday, Jan. 12.

His family told police Vazquez lives with dementia and regularly uses public transit, such as buses and trains, to travel to other suburbs.

Hanus believes that by using public transit, Vazquez may have been able to avoid the subzero temperatures.
