Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Quinn Herbert, Loyola wrestling and football

Quinn Herbert is a senior wrestler (190 pounds) for the Ramblers. Herbert qualified for the state tournament last year. He also was an All-League football player for Loyola.

1. Do you have prematch rituals or superstitions?

It’s changed a lot in the past couple years. I figured out recently that I do a lot better if I’m looser and joking around. So I have coaches spitball jokes at me and I’m laughing, and I feel better when I’m loose.

2. What are your plans for next year?

I hope to wrestle. I’m not sure what school yet. I’m still looking at schools and talking to a couple right now.

3. Football or wrestling?

I think I’d have to go wrestling. Football is awesome and more of a team sport. Wrestling is something I’ve been doing since I was 4 years old. It’s such a big part of my life.

4. What makes you a successful wrestler?

I think it’s definitely my coaches. I’ve had so many coaches throughout the year and they all specialize in certain things. I’m pretty good at picking up on details when coaches tell me to do something. I can get something out of every coach and I have complied a lot from them. They turned me into the wrestler I am.

5. If you could try another sport, what would it be?

I think I’d go baseball. I used to play as a kid. I played with my dad all the time. I loved it when I was really young. It’s a fun sport — and light conditioning-wise compared to wrestling, which is nice.

6. What is your dream job?

I want to be an engineer. I love building stuff and I math. I think it would be cool to be a NASA engineer. I think that’s the dream job. Exploring outer space is cool.

7. What is your favorite thing to do off the mat?

I really like hanging out with friends, playing sports all the time. I like playing basketball with my buddies. They are really good at it; I’m not really great at it. Competing with friends with something not too serious, I love it.

8. If you’re in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?

I think I’d have to go with Twix ice cream bars. They are kind of newer, but they are awesome. I love them.

9. What is something people don’t know about you?

I’m really into music. I love hip-hop, jazz, R&B, house. How certain genres influence other genres — I think hip hop is my favorite — I like looking into that.

10. What do you and your team hope to accomplish this season?

My goal for this year is the same goal I’ve had my whole life. I want to be a state champion. I didn’t have a chance in eighth grade (COVID year). This is really been what I’ve been working for these past four years. As a team, I think we have a great chance for a sectional run. Loyola has never done it before, but we’ve been getting better each year. We have a ton of great guys and great young guys. I think we can make a team sectional appearance.
