(Editor’s note: This story was updated at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14)

A 16-year-old boy was shot to death on Sunday morning in Highland Park, according to local authorities.

The Lake County coroner identified the teen as Omar Diaz, of Highwood, on Monday, Aug. 14.

Police are looking for the gunman who reportedly fled on foot following the shooting at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 13 in the 2300 block of Green Bay Road — a residential area on the northern end of Highland Park. It was originally reported that the offender fled on the bicycle, which authorities believe not to be true, according to a press release from the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.

According to the release, police believe the shooting was “targeted and not random.” The gunman reportedly approached the 16-year-old as he was walking along the sidewalk. After a “brief conversation,” the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the teenager, the release says.

The boy was transported to Highland Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses reportedly told police the shooter is a male dressed in black with a bicycle. The estimated age of the shooter is unclear.

Authorities have reopened the roadways near the shooting and say in the release that there is “no known threat to the community.”

Highland Park police are investigating the shooting along with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
