Cyclist killed in Highland Park hit-and-run, mayor says

A portion of Deerfield Road in Highland Park was closed as of Friday afternoon while local authorities investigated a fatal hit-and-run, according to a release from the City of Highland Park.

Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering tweeted that a bicyclist was struck by a car around 12:35 p.m. June 2 and later died at the Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The identity of the victim was not immediately available.

“The offending vehicle left the scene prior to emergency services’ arrival,” Rotering wrote in the tweet.

Highland Park police did not immediately provide more details on the accident that reportedly occurred at Piccadilly and Deerfield roads, but Deputy Chief Bill Bonaguidi said Deerfield Road between Carriage Way and Lilac Lane could be closed until the evening hours.

Highland Park police, with the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, are investigating the crash and are asking anyone with information to call (847) 432-7730 or email polie@cityhpil.com.
