Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Vicky Hughes, New Trier bowling

Vicky Hughes is a senior bowler for the Trevians. She also plays softball and played on the golf team.

1. Do you have any prematch rituals or superstitions?

I always make sure I get down my strike ball and work on my 10-pin (spare) shot. We usually have 10 minutes before a match. After that 10 minutes, we all come together in a huddle and do a quick, little cheer and have a talk before we start the match or tournament.

2. How long have you been bowling?

I bowled for all four years. All my sisters did it and my brothers did it. I’ve always been surrounded by it. I’ve always kind of known I would do it in high school, but I didn’t take it seriously until high school. That’s how it is for a lot of us. The best part about it is you don’t really have to have experience beforehand.

3. What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not bowling?

Probably have that down time with friends — some time to reset, especailly hanging out with friends. I’m a very social person, so I kind of reset with socializing. That’s my favorite thing to do.

4. What do you enjoy most about bowling?

Just the team. We’re such a close team. There are maybe 14 or 15 girls, including JV and varsity, so we all are really close. I am super close with a lot of sophomores and freshmen since I am the only upperclassman. There’s never drama or anything. We’re just such a close team and just have a good time with each other.

5. If you could try another sport, what would it be?

I think I would try dancing or something. When I was a kid, I loved dancing. It would be so cool to be a dancer. I always spent time doing a lot of sports when I was younger so I never got to that one.

6. What are your plans for next year?

I haven’t settled down on a college. I am definitely going to go to college next year. I want to go far away from home. I’ve always wanted to go far out of state. I’m not sure exactly where. I applied to 10-plus colleges.

7. What is your dream job?

My dream job is to travel the world. If a job can consist of traveling the world, I would definitely do that. That’s been on my radar. If there’s a job where that’s included, it would be amazing.

8. If you are in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?

Definitely a Dr. Pepper and I really like (Flamin’) Hot Cheetos. They’re my go-to.

9. What is something people don’t know about you?

Probably that I’m a very social person but I do thrive on alone time as well. I show off a very social part of me, but to have down time alone is something I love. I love to drive and listen to music by myself. It’s one of my favorite things to do.

10. What are your goals the rest of the season?

My goals are play it by ear. This is a fresh team and I want us to just do our best at regionals for now. If we move on, that would be amazing. We’ll try our best this Saturday and I’m hoping we bring our energy and our best play. I’m so proud of these girls. However it turns out I will always be proud of them.
