News Briefs: Hofherr Meat Co. stars in podcast, Wilmette’s Black History Month contests, Gap Year Fair on Saturday

An episode of the popular food podcast, “Proof,” that features Northfield’s Hofherr Meat Co. was released on Jan. 12.

In the episode, called “The World’s Greatest Italian Beef,” host Kevin Pang works with Hofherr to construct the best Italian beef sandwich possible. The story was previewed by The Record in early December, when Hofherr’s made and sold 100 of the sandwiches.

“Proof” is the flagship podcast from America’s Test Kitchen, for which Pang, a Wilmette resident, is editorial director for digital.


Black History Month contests

The Village of Wilmette has brought back its Black History Month contests sponsored by the village’s Human Relations Commission.

From now through Feb. 16, the village is collecting poster, essay/poetry and multimedia/music submissions with the theme “Black resistance.” According to the village that can include “stories about the fight for freedom, justice and equality; self-determination; and/or social transformation.”

All poster contestants must be from Wilmette and enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade. The essay/poetry and art/multimedia/music categories are for those in grades 5-12.

Entries may be mailed to or dropped off at Wilmette Village Hall, Attn: Human Relations Commission, Village Manager’s Office, 1200 Wilmette Ave., Wilmette, IL 60091.

New Trier to host Gap Year Fair on Saturday, Jan. 28

Students and parents can learn more about gap year programs and providers during a free in-person fair from noon-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at New Trier High School’s Winnetka campus.

According to a press release from the school, “interested Chicago-area students and parents can learn about gap year options and connect with gap year program providers face-to-face.”

The USA Gap Year Fair is put on by Go Overseas, which puts on 30-40 events per year to put gap-year organizations in front of students, parents and educators.
