Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Annie Lewis, New Trier water polo

Annie Lewis is a senior driver for the Trevians water polo team. This season, she has scored 44 goals (second on the team) to go with 34 assists (also second on the team).

1. Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

For pregame, I just spend a lot of time listening to music, getting in the right head space for the game. And if there is a game beforehand, I watch and see if there is anything I can pick up, any pattern the team plays.

2. What are you doing next year?

I am going to Chapman University (Orange, California) to play water polo. It is good for me because it’s a smaller style of school and a liberal arts school, because I don’t really know what I want to do. I like the liberal arts style where you get to try everything. And I liked the smaller class size where you get to know your classmates and your professors.

3. What is your favorite thing to do out of the pool?

I spend a lot of time with my friends. I’m a huge foodie so I like to go to all the restaurants around here and be with my friends.

4. What is your favorite local restaurant?

I love Torino (Ramen in Wilmette). It’s my favorite restaurant. I love ramen. And I have friends who work there so I get to visit them. I just love Asian cuisine.

5. If you could try another sport, what would it be?

Honestly, I kind of want to try lacrosse. It seems like it’s a fun sport. That or fencing. I feel like running at people with swords would be interesting.

6. Do you have a favorite athlete?

Actually, I was recently at the NCSA championships for water polo and there were like six Olympians in the pool. I can’t choose out of them, but right now, Maggie Steffens (Team USA). She is so cool – to see the way she plays, she is so passionate about the sport.

7. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

I think I would go to Japan. Traveling is something I’ve always wanted to do.

8. If you are in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?

I am definitely getting candy. I’m a huge sweets person. Probably Sweet Tart Ropes and Haribo Peachs and then maybe a ginger ale.

9. What is something people do not know about you?

A lot of people don’t know that when I’m not with friends I spend a lot of time blowing glass. I took a class at New Trier and fell in love with it. I’ve taken three classes of glass blowing.

10. What result at the state finals will make you happy?

as a team, if we just play like we played last weekend I will be happy. We played very connected. They were high-stakes games but did’t feel like it. … It felt right. If we play that way, I’l be happy. And all of us, and personally, I’d love to win and get a state title under my name.
