Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Courtney Schumacher, New Trier softball, hockey and golf

Courtney Schumacher is a three-sport varsity athlete for the Trevians and is in her first season playing softball. The shortstop played baseball as a freshman and will attend Colby College to play hockey next year.

1. In softball, do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

Since this is my first season, I don’t really have any rituals, but I normally play catch with Avery Weinstein before every game. We’ve been friends for a long time and played baseball together.

2. Why did you join softball this season?

I wanted to play a spring sport and I have been missing baseball. I knew a couple girls on the softball team and really wanted to try it. I absolutely love it.

3. What is the biggest difference between softball and baseball?

The dimensions on the field. The field is smaller — bases are shorter, the mount is closer to home plate — and then obviously the pitching.

4. Do you miss baseball?

I do miss baseball, but I actually really like softball and it’s a much better environment and I love the girls and how the girls are so supportive of each other. It is way more fun.

5. Why is Colby College a good fit for you?

I visited a lot of schools and I love the coaches and players on the team on the hockey side. It is also a really good academic school so it was a really good fit for me.

6. What is your dream job?

My dream job is to be in the FBI. I am majoring in psychology in college to hopefully make this a reality.

7. What is your favorite thing to do off the field (or ice)?

My favorite thing to do is hang out with my friends and honestly pay sports and be outside.

8. If you are in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?

I am buying something Reese’s. It’s my all-time favorite sweet.

9. What is something people do not know about you?

I was on “American Ninja Warrior Junior” when I was 14. I made it through the course, but I ended up losing.

10. What does this softball team hope to accomplish this season?

We started off the season not our best, but we’re working on our hitting and being at the plate and lots of other fundamentals, and it is already starting to pay off. We want to continue this improvement and hopefully end with winning season.
