High School Highlights: Trevians boys water polo continues dominant start; Volleyball teams start with W’s

A summary of preps sports competition from area schools over the past week

BOYS WATER POLO
Dan Lynch Classic

New Trier (8-0) topped Naperville Central 10-4 on Saturday, March 19, to win the program’s first title at the Fenwick High School tournament in Oak Park.

The Trevians also bested Lyons, 12-6, Fenwick, 13-1, and Neuqua Valley 18-4.

On the weekend, the New Trier program — the varsity, junior varsity and freshman/sophomore teams — went 18-0 with four tournament championships.

BASEBALL
Triad 7, New Trier 6

Graham Mastros smacked a grand slam for the Trevs, but Triad earned the walk-off win on Saturday, March 19, in the Kickoff Classic in Evansville.

Brenden Stressler hit a home run and A.J. Steinback knocked in two runs for New Trier (0-2).

Edwardsville 7, New Trier 6

A.J. Steinback and Dylan Mayer hit two-run homers but the Trevians surrendered four runs in the seventh to take the loss Friday, March 16.

SOFTBALL
Fenwick 10, New Trier 0 (5 inn.)

The Friars’ Talia Lorenzo threw a non-hitter while striking out 12 in the Trevians’ opener Monday, March 21, in Oak Park.

GIRLS SOCCER
Evanston 3, Loyola 2

The host Ramblers (2-1-1) dropped a back-and-forth affair on Tuesday, March 22, in Wilmette.

Loyola 7, Marist 0

Kaitlyn Kurtz recorded a hat trick to lead the Ramblers to the nononference win on Monday, March 21.

Grace Ehlert added a pair of goals for Loyola.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
New Trier 25-25, Lake Zurich 16-15

The Trevians moved to 2-0 with the sweep of the host Bears Wednesday, March 23, in Lake Zurich.

Loyola 25-21-25, Niles West 23-25-23

Colin Murray (13 kills), Ben Trapp (12 kills) and Mark Gonzalez (10 kills, 9 blocks) led the Ramblers to the thrilling season-opening victory Wednesday, March 23, in Wilmette.

Casey McMenamin racked up 41 assists for Loyola, and Andrew Sheedy chipped in 21 digs.

New Trier 25-25, Warren 15-13

The Trevians earned the nonconference victory in their season opener on Monday, March 21, in Northfield.

Naperville North Tournament

New Trier went 2-1 on Saturday, Mach 19, at Naperville North, picking up wins against Lincoln-Way Central (14-5) and North (13-10) and a loss against Fenwick (9-8).
